The UAE National Carbon Registry is set to play a key role in the effective monitoring and accounting of carbon emissions. It will also provide a reliable tool for quantitatively assessing the country’s environmental initiatives in carbon removal, forming part of broader efforts towards sustainable development and combating climate change. The registry will enable the country not only to meet global standards but also to stimulate innovations aimed at reducing its carbon footprint.

Her Excellency Mariam bint Mohammed Saeed Hareb Almheiri, the UAE Minister of Climate Change and Environment, emphasising the significance of this project during the panel discussion ‘Establishing the Ecosystem for Carbon Markets in the UAE’, stated, “I really want to first take the opportunity to thank our partners, Industrial Innovation Group, and my team, as this is one of the first of this kind initiatives in the region. The National Carbon Registry is a significant milestone for the UAE, and it really emphasises our commitment to building an economy and ecosystem that promotes and rewards sustainable behavior. This registry provides the UAE with a unique opportunity to combat the climate crisis, promotes sustainable projects, and advances innovations in financing mitigation activities in a way which has environmental integrity. It is the world’s first global project of such scale, and I am genuinely proud that we have initiated it.”
Mr. Taryam Matar Taryam, CEO of INDUSTRIAL INNOVATION GROUP, expressed confidence in the successful implementation of the project: “For Industrial Innovation Group, it is a great honor to collaborate with the UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment at this significant historical moment. In 2023, the UAE is taking a decisive and responsible step forward in regulating collective emissions, progressively reducing their impact on the environment. The National Carbon Registry will act as a catalyst for transformations in carbon accounting and the development of innovative solutions, implementing environmentally friendly initiatives.”

Ms. Muna Ahmad Alamudi, Director of Climate Change at the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, stated: “The launch of the National Carbon Registry in the UAE, jointly developed with Industrial Innovation Group and Venom, is a significant step in combating climate change. This registry combines rigorous resolution and a transparent registration process, ensuring 100% traceability and transparency through the implementation of advanced web3 and blockchain technology. Particularly important is the process of issuing carbon credits: once projects are confirmed and verified by MOCCAE, they become eligible for emission reduction certificates, which can then be traded. This opens new opportunities not only for raising environmental standards in the UAE but also for international cooperation in line with the Paris Agreement.”

The UAE National Carbon Registry sets new standards in sustainability and environmental protection, ensuring a balance is maintained so that economic growth, historically linked with increasing carbon emissions, is not compromised. The sustainable future of humanity deeply depends on initiatives that couterbalance carbon emissions effectively decelerating the rise in global temperatures.
